The rule that changed
SystemIn Aion 2 each server hosts a single race. Since the two halves of Atreia live apart, war needs a bridge: server pairing, which decides which server the enemy you meet in the Abyss and the Time-Space Rifts comes from.
Until now that bridge had one assumption: the other side would always be the enemy race. The October 28 notice knocks that down in one line — "the same faction can now be paired". Asmodian vs. Asmodian stopped being an accident and became official configuration.

⟡ What changed
- The Abyss now accepts same-faction pairs — official example: Asmodian vs. Asmodian
- Abyss and Rifts got separate tables: one's pair isn't necessarily the other's
- The grid grew in two regions — Europe and Asia opened new servers since launch
⟡ What stays the same
- One race per server, and the entry order Region → Race → Server
- The Time-Space Rifts are still always Elyos × Asmodian
- The pairings remain temporary and will be redone periodically
⟡ The official example
⟡ AttentionNCSoft repeats the illustration from the launch notice: if the Asmodian server Israphel is paired with the Elyos server Siel, every Asmodian from Israphel who enters the Abyss will find Elyos from Siel. These, in the notice's own words, are the players you'll "clash with, compete against, and hold grudges toward".
Abyss and Rift — two tables, two logics
PvPThe structural change in the notice is the split. There are 53 pairs in the Abyss and 53 in the Rifts, across the same five regions and the same servers — but built by different criteria.
The Abyss was paired by population balance, with no regard for faction: 25 of the 53 pairs are internal. The Rifts keep the classic reading — every Elyos server married to an Asmodian, with no exception in any region. In practice, the same server has two different enemies depending on which portal you cross.

Europe
PvPThe largest grid in the game and the one that grew the most in absolute numbers: 23 pairs in the Abyss, 23 in the Rifts, 46 servers in total — ten more than the launch grid we covered in October, with Fafnir, Atiel, Indnath, Agnita, Tiamat, Gauss, Tassin, Istar, Lamuatan, and Nathara joining the list.
It's also where the new rule shows up the most: 13 of the 23 Abyss pairs join same-faction servers — an absolute majority.

⟡ A discrepancy in the official table
⟡ AttentionThe European server Gauss shows up as Asmodian in the Abyss table (pair Kasaka × Gauss) and as Elyos in the Rift table (pair Gauss × Indnath). The two readings don't fit together, and the Rift side is the one that balances the count: there, Europe has exactly 23 servers of each faction. We're treating it as a typo in the notice — but double-check in the client before choosing.
North America East
PvP9 pairs per mode, 18 servers — two more than at launch, with Nemon and Hithanya joining the grid.

PvPThe leanest grid, and the only one that hasn't changed size since launch: 5 pairs per mode, 10 servers.
2 of the 5 Abyss pairs are same-faction — Triniel × Marchutan (Asmodian vs. Asmodian) and Kaisinel × Yustiel (Elyos vs. Elyos). With concentrated population, expect to keep meeting the same names on the other side.

South America — the BR address
PvP6 pairs per mode, 12 servers, the same grid size as launch. It's the region that matters most to players from Brazil — and the one that felt the rule change the hardest.
4 of the 6 Abyss pairs are same-faction: the highest proportion of any region. In practice, the Brazilian player will spend more time measuring strength against their own side than against the enemy race.

And it's the most conservative: only 2 of the 10 Abyss pairs are internal. The other 8 keep Elyos vs. Asmodian, Atreia's classic reading.

Today's pair is not tomorrow's pair
PvPThe notice goes back to answering the same question from launch — will the pairing always be the same? No. NCSoft says it will update the pairs periodically "to keep combat balanced," and that very clause is exactly what opened the door to same-faction pairs.
The read is straightforward: the system isn't optimizing for narrative, it's optimizing for the queue. When one faction's population doesn't match the other's within a region, the algorithm prefers an internal matchup to an empty queue.
⟡ This list has an expiration date
⟡ AttentionTreat the October 28 grid as a snapshot of a window, not a final configuration. NCSoft itself closes the notice with the message: "leave your mark while you can".

⟡ Creator's voice“The detail nobody's going to read in the table is what it admits. Pairing Asmodian with Asmodian in the Abyss isn't a design decision, it's a confession about balance: in nearly half the pairs there wasn't enough racial enemy on the other side to build a fair fight. And the math is worse exactly where it hurts us most — in South America, 4 of the 6 Abyss pairs are internal. The BR player is going to walk into the Abyss expecting Atreia's war and is going to find the neighbor. The system keeps working; the fantasy is what cracked.”

South America's grid hasn't grown since launch: 12 servers, 6 pairs. Europe and Asia opened new servers; our region didn't.

- 25 of 53 Abyss pairs are internal; the 53 Rift pairs are all still Elyos × Asmodian.
- By region: Europe 23 pairs (13 internal) · Asia 10 (2) · NA East 9 (4) · South America 6 (4) · NA West 5 (2).

- Error in the source: the European server Gauss shows up as Asmodian in the Abyss and as Elyos in the Rifts — the second reading is the one that balances the count.
- Expiration date: NCSoft will redo the pairings periodically to balance combat. Confidence 7.5.
