~257 drops minimum to IL 80
From 79 to 80 the chance falls to 5% — around 20 drops per category.
Watermark calculator
SystemEnter the highest item level you have ever dropped in each category — not what you have equipped. The calculator reproduces the exact drop table from the game files: your watermark, the odds for your next drop, which category to farm next, and how many drops stand between you and IL 80.
Enter the HIGHEST item level you have ever dropped in each category (45–80).

The watermark, as it actually works
SystemThe patch notes said your item level growth is based on "the average value of the highest levels for each weapon, armor, and accessory category". What the game files show is more specific — and more punishing. Your watermark is the average of the highest item level you have ever dropped in each of the three categories: weapon, armor, accessory. Rounded down.
Fixed item level gear — heroics, Arch Boss weapons — does not count. And nothing you do with the item matters: equip it, sell it, bank it. The drop itself is what registers. Your next drop can be at best +1 above your watermark, and down to -3 below it.
The devs promised the opposite
⟡ WarningThe official line was that growth would focus on "the fun of hunting and acquiring rather than complex spec calculations". The data says otherwise: if you don't track your highest drop per category, you will waste drops. That is exactly what this guide's calculator is for.
The hard-stuck trap
DungeonHere is how half the server got stuck: the new dungeons drop no weapons at all. If you start the expansion with armor 50, accessory 50 and weapon 45 — common for anyone who synced an Arch Boss weapon — your watermark is 48, and no amount of dungeon spam moves it.
Every chest you open past that point is a wasted chance. Your watermark stays put because the one category that needs a drop — the weapon — never gets one. People burned a full week of dungeon currency and stockpiled resources exactly this way.
What locks you
- Running all your dungeons back-to-back in one sitting
- Purifying your whole stock of the same category in one go
- Ignoring that new dungeons drop zero weapons
- Letting one category sit 1+ levels below the other two
What unlocks you
- Pacing dungeons and checking your watermark after each drop
- Farming the lowest category first — it holds your average down
- Hall of Illusion for weapon drops (6.7%, up to IL 80)
- Claiming the IL 45 set from Path of Ascension part 2, step 1, right away
The climb, in numbers
PvEThe chance that a drop raises your watermark starts generous and collapses at the end. From 51 to 69 you need 1.5 to 2 drops per level. At 79, only 5% of drops come out as IL 80 — about 20 drops per category just for the final step.
Add it all up and one category takes ~86 drops from 51 to 80. Three categories: 257 drops minimum, assuming perfect staggering — which is impossible, since dungeon drops are random. Realistically, expect well over 300.

Efficient farm route
BuildThe whole strategy is one word: stagger. Never clear all dungeons, all solo dungeons or all purifications in one sitting. After every relevant drop, check whether it raised a category record — and redirect your next run to whichever category is lowest.
Example from the drop table: at weapon 53, armor 52, accessory 52, you cannot drop an IL 54 weapon. You first need armor and accessory at 53. One armor drop alone is not enough — the accessory still caps your average.
Tier gear caps at IL 50
⟡ WarningBelow watermark 51, tier gear cannot roll higher than IL 50. The 51+ range only opens once you drop the new expansion gear, which starts at IL 51 regardless of your watermark. Run the new content first — then start counting.

⟡ Creator's voice“This system punishes exactly the most dedicated player: the one who stockpiles resources and dumps everything on patch day. The watermark turns binge sessions into waste — the edge now belongs to whoever paces. Run the calculator before purifying anything: your lowest category is always your next farm.”

1-minute summary
System⟡ For those in a hurry
01:00- Watermark: average of the HIGHEST item levels ever dropped in weapon, armor and accessory — rounded down.
- Only the drop counts: equipping, selling or banking the item changes nothing.
- Hard stuck: new dungeons drop no weapons — without a new weapon, your watermark sits at 50 forever.
- Golden rule: always farm your lowest-IL category; it is what holds your average down.
- The wall: from 79 to 80 the chance is 5% — ~20 drops per category.
- Verdict: the system demands a spreadsheet; use the calculator in this article instead. Confidence 8/10.
